A Surprisingly Fun Game

Among the thousands of Native American tribes, there were a lot of games being played similar to what we now call Lacrosse before the civilization of North America. According to many, the first Europeans to see this game being played were French explorers. These French explorers thought the stick resembled a bishop’s crosier. A Bishop’s crosier translates to Lacrosse in French and this is where the name of the game originated.
In 1856, the first step towards turning Lacrosse into a modern organized sport came when the Montreal Lacrosse club developed the first written rules for the game. George Beers wrote these rules. His rules called for a 12-player team and named each position: goal, point, cover point, first defense, second defense, third defense, center, third attack, second attack, first attack, out home and home. Beer also changed the design of the ball and the sticks, to better suit catching the ball and throwing it more accurately.
Beer was later named the father of lacrosse. The Canada’s National Lacrosse Association
Was established in 1867 and the sport became quite popular in Bristol, London and also in the United States.
After lacrosse died out in the United States in the middle of the nineteenth century, the U.S amateur lacrosse Association was founded in 1879. After the big bang of success in the ALA many of colleges started playing lacrosse to improve their player skills in the game of field hockey,
Many of years passed by until 1971 when the NCAA began conducting it’s annual championship lacrosse tournament. Since 1934, the U.S Lacrosse association has been conducting the U.S open tournament.
Lacrosse is a contact game played by ten players on each team: one goalie, three defense man, three midfielders and three attack man. Each team must keep at least four players including the goalie on the defensive half of the field, and three players on the offensive side of the field. There are three other players that are allowed to attack both ends of the fields, buy wow gold some call these players roamers. Body checking is permitted if the opponent has the ball or is within five yards of a loose ball. A attacking player can not enter the crease of the goal.
There are lots of great Lacrosse teams but one that sticks out to me the most is a small team called the Panthers. Middlebury Vermont is the home of this great Lacrosse team. The Middlebury Panthers has won its fourth straight NESCAC men lacrosse championship as they defeated Wesleyan twelve to seven. The Middlebury Panthers are also making their ninth straight appearance in the NCAA tournament; this is almost as big as it gets in the sport of Lacrosse. This is a great group of talented young lacrosse players joint together by the love of the game. Look, if you have never played this game you really need to, it is full of fun and excitement.

50 Years of Speed

The Goodyear Thunderdome was the first purpose built Oval speedway outside of the continent of America.
Construction started in November 1984 and it was officially opened by the Mayor of Keilor on August 3rd. 1987 although it was christened by Americans Richard Petty, Bobby Hillin Jnr. and Rodney Combs along with local men Jim Richards,Graeme Crosby and Gary Rush.
The first race was only a couple of weeks later when a 300 Km.wow gold Touring Car race was run on the combined Oval/road circuit. The race was won by Terry Sheil and John Bowe in a Nissan Skyline(the only time a Japanese car has won on the Thunderdome) from the Commodore of Larry Perkins and Bill O’Brien. Allan Grice had been quickest in practise with a lap of 1m.45.74s and he also set the fastest lap in the race with a time of 1m.46.17s.
Later that year another race took place on the combined circuit and this was a round of the World Touring Car Championship.Pole position went to Klaus Ludwig in an Eggenberger Ford Sierra with a 1m.42.92s but in the race it was his team mates Steve Soper and Pierre Diuedonne who took the honours from Emanuelle Pirro and Roberto Ravaglia in a BMW M3. The race was not without problems as it began to rain very heavily just before the start and so for the only time a race was run on the Thunderdome in the wet. The other feature was that the combined circuit goes in a clockwise direction (same as for AUSCAR) which was fine for the locals but not so good for the European Fords and BMWs.
The first Oval meeting was held on February 28th. 1988 and it was a mixture of Americans, mostly from the Winston West series, and Australians. A bonus for the organisers was that just 2 weeks before the event Bobby Allison, one of the imported stars, won the biggest NASCAR race of them all, the Daytona 500, giving the Thunderdome a huge publicity boost.
A crowd of over 46,000 saw a typical NASCAR race which,of course, had a typical NASCAR multi car shunt. On lap 80 the cars of Allan Grice, Gary Collins, Dick Johnson, Brad Noffsinger, Harry Goulart, John Lawes, Terry Byers and Bill Venturini were all put out of the race after coming together in Turn 3 but again typical to NASCAR the injury toll was very light with only Allan Grice sustaining anything serious, a broken collar bone.
